We, the Randolph County North Carolina America 250 NC Committee, believe that preserving, studying and celebrating history strengthens our communities, builds bonds among our residents, engages youth in our founding principles, and improves our economies by attracting visitors to better appreciate our community.
We further believe that it is fitting and desirable to commemorate the beginning of our great nation and the role North Carolina and Randolph County have played over the past 250 years, recognizing that battles for freedom involve people of many creeds and beliefs. Our particular story is one of families and loyalties divided, a story of strife and skirmish during the Revolutionary years which pitted neighbor against neighbor, friend against friend. Randolph County was truly a battleground of freedom as those loyal to the British Crown and those fighting for the new idea of independence navigated uncertain times, yet gradually transitioned to the peaceful pursuits of agriculture, commerce, and industry.
Therefore, it is the mission of the Randolph County America 250 NC Committee to engage every citizen in the 250th anniversary of the United States by remembering the past, celebrating the present and building a promising future.
The Revolutionary Randolph logo features an image of a Continental Army light dragoon inspired by an equestrian stove tile unearthed during a 1974-1975 archaeological excavation at the Mount Shepherd pottery site of Joseph Meyer, a Moravian master potter who was active 1775-1800. The eight-pointed stars recall those seen on American flags before five-pointed stars became standard, and in particular, on a flag with blue stars on a white canton, with red and blue stripes, reputed to have been carried by North Carolina militia at the battle of Guilford Courthouse.
